habari na karibu! We are the Kenyan chapter of Education 4Earth, and we are based in Nairobi. We focus on issues in urbanization and water sanitation issues. Here’s more about us!
So our education program focuses a lot on ecology, economics, public health, and maths to understand our local challenges. The water sanitation issue stems from our country having significant water scarcity issues, which, coupled with more frequent severe weather events, means that many people don’t have access to clean water. So, we’ve focused on educating our community about WASH from USAID, explaining the origins of severe water contamination, and methods to prevent it through sanitation and hygiene. We connect these ideas in our ecology courses by understanding urbanization in the context of population dynamics in Africa. It also goes through concepts such as population pyramids, biomes, and some geological content, in a general scope, and also through Kenya. The economics courses here are currently being planned; they’ll be taught by US members. We currently have 56 members and 87 students.
To reflect our theme in combating water contamination issues in Nairobi, we have begun a social media campaign to inform the public about WASH. Many people here aren’t aware of human-caused environmental challenges, so we try to bring relevancy to them through the WASH initiative. We started with a social media campaign, helping to help people understand the background on WASH and how they can get involved-- tying back into the education program. Going forward, we plan to learn more about the origins of water resource scarcity in the Mara River Basin, and how people are dealing with it. To do this, we’ll be conducting surveys and interviews with the help of chapter members and students. We are also expanding the WASH social media campaign to different platforms to reach a larger audience.
